For most garments, apply DTF transfers at 280°F–300°F using medium pressure for 10 seconds. Wait 20–30 seconds before cold peeling, then cover the transfer and press it again for 8–10 seconds.
How Do DTF Transfers Work?
DTF transfers are printed using water-based ink and coated with a powdered adhesive. During heat pressing, the adhesive melts and bonds with the garment fibres to create a durable, flexible print.
What Heat Press Settings Should I Use for DTF Transfers?
The following settings provide a good starting point for most cotton, polyester, and blended garments:
- Pressure: Medium pressure
- Temperature: 280°F–300°F
- Initial pressing time: 10 seconds
- Peeling: Wait 20–30 seconds, then cold peel the transfer sheet.
- Final press: Cover the transfer with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet and press again for 8–10 seconds.
Fabrics and heat presses can vary. Test a small area or sample garment before beginning production, especially when working with an unfamiliar fabric or heat press.
Can I Apply a DTF Transfer with a Household Iron?
A household iron may be suitable for some personal or hobby projects, but it is not recommended for commercial production.
Household irons do not provide the precise temperature control, consistent pressure, or even heat distribution required for reliable transfer application. Achieving complete coverage and durable adhesion can be especially difficult with larger designs or repeated applications.
For consistent, commercial-quality results, use a heat press designed to provide accurate temperature and uniform pressure.
Can I Apply DTF Transfers to Coated or Water-Repellent Fabrics?
Some products—including certain tote bags, jackets, and water-repellent garments—have waxy coatings or fabric finishes that can prevent the adhesive from bonding properly. These finishes may also reduce the lifespan of the transfer.
Pre-pressing the garment for 3–5 seconds may help warm the fabric, remove moisture, and improve the adhesive bond.
Always test a small, inconspicuous area before applying a complete transfer to a coated or water-repellent product.
What Happens If Too Much Heat Is Applied?
Using too much heat or pressing for too long can:
- Scorch or burn the garment
- Melt or damage polyester fabrics
- Cause garment or transfer colours to fade
- Over-cure the adhesive
- Leave the fabric shiny, stiff, or discoloured
If the garment appears shiny, scorched, discoloured, or stiff, reduce the temperature or pressing time before continuing.
Should a DTF Transfer Cool Before Handling?
Yes. Allow the transfer to cool and set properly before stretching, folding, packaging, or wearing the garment.
Stretching or handling the print while it is still warm may weaken the adhesive bond or damage the finished transfer.
