Heat Press Instructions

DTF transfers are printed using water-based ink and coated with a powdered adhesive that allows the transfer to bond to the garment. During heat pressing, the adhesive melts and bonds with the garment fibres.

For most garments, the following heat press settings provide the best results.

Heat Press Settings

  • Pressure: Medium pressure
  • Temperature: 280°F–300°F
  • Pressing time: 10 seconds
  • Peeling: Wait 20–30 seconds, then peel the transfer sheet cold.
  • Final press: Cover the transfer with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet and press again for 8–10 seconds.

These settings are suitable for most cotton, polyester, and blended garments. Because fabrics and heat presses can vary, we recommend testing a small area or sample garment before beginning production.

Household Irons

For best results, we do not recommend using a household iron to apply transfers for commercial production. Household irons may be suitable for personal or hobby projects, but they are not designed to provide the precise temperature control, consistent pressure, or even heat distribution required for reliable transfer application.

Achieving consistent coverage and durable adhesion can be difficult with an iron, particularly with larger designs or repeated applications. For commercial-quality results, we recommend using a heat press designed to provide accurate temperature, uniform pressure, and consistent performance.

Coated and Water-Repellent Fabrics

Some products, including certain tote bags, jackets, and water-repellent garments, may have waxy coatings or fabric finishes that make application more difficult. These coatings can prevent the adhesive from bonding properly and may reduce the lifespan of the transfer.

In some cases, pre-pressing the garment for 3–5 seconds before applying the transfer can help warm the fabric, remove moisture, and improve the adhesive bond.

Avoid Excessive Heat

Too much heat or pressing for too long can:

  • Scorch or burn the garment
  • Melt or damage polyester fabrics
  • Cause garment or transfer colours to fade
  • Over-cure the adhesive
  • Leave the fabric shiny, stiff, or discoloured

If the garment appears shiny, scorched, discoloured, or stiff, reduce the temperature or pressing time before continuing.

Allow the Transfer to Cool

Allow the transfer to cool and cure properly before stretching, folding, packaging, or wearing the garment. Stretching the print while it is still warm may weaken the adhesive bond or damage the finished transfer.
